On my bookshelf is a beautiful copy
of Light Warriors by Joyce
Tenneson. It was a gift from my husband bearing his handwritten
inscription on the cover page. "To my beloved, you are my light
warrior… May the entrapment of all we know to be wrong, be enveloped by
all we know to by right…”
I've heard it said, “To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” The Bible goes on to say, “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” So has set the framework for my creative endeavors. The seeking of redemptive art.
Through the process of creating these images I have discovered a vehicle for voice. Constructive ways to speak what’s on my mind, wrestle with my limitations, and freely worship my creator. Through this process I have lived.
While making images I often refer back to themes of journey, hope, and rebirth. The images in my human series feature the subject in honest and vulnerable form. There are parts of his story quite similar to others I've heard told. I wanted a narrative woven within the images. Something that is specific yet universal. The making of the series has had a redemptive effect on both the photographer and the photographed as we have sought to be "enveloped by all we know to be right."
The self portrait series has helped me win battles against vanity, materialism, and discontentment, giving me permission to delight in my love for nature and accept both my strengths and weaknesses.
Along the way I've learned a creative life is not just about the final tangible product. It's about the road traveled. It's teaching me to slow down and value what's around me. Stories matter, people matter, thus art matters if that's the way I'm going to tell it.
I have two young children. This art making constantly keeps me in check. I think of their little eyes and busy minds. Of all the beautiful details and truths I want them to know. Being an artist is hardly separable from being a mother, a wife, a human being. These images... they are just me being.
